FAQ

Do you use needles to knit your blankets?

No I do not use needles for any of my work – everything is made using my arms or my hands.

Is everything made completely by you?

Yes, every single piece of knitting that you see here is made 100% by me with love and care, even down to each individual tag!

I also hand make many of the embellishments and ribbons. Any that are not made by my own hand I do usually adapt in some way by adding clips or fasteners to secure these to my hand knitted pieces.

What types of yarn do you use?

I use Mammoth Vegan Acrylic yarn for all of my arm knitted blankets and bed runners. I use chenille wool and tube yarn for my Hot Water Bottles and home accessories.

Can you use Merino Wool?

Yes, you can use giant Merino wool, however, it has its drawbacks. Merino wool is very heavy, very expensive and it’s not machine washable. Vegan Acrylic is more practical and affordable.

Are the blankets suitable for everyday use?

Giant acrylic yarn is recommend for occasional or decorative use. The yarn is very soft so using your blanket every day can make the yarn fibres loosen and pill. Pilling is a normal occurrence that occurs with all types of yarns – you see this on the clothes you wear when bobbles appear on the surface. I recommend occasional use of all Vegan Acrylic blankets to ensure these last as long as possible.

What should I do if my blanket is pilling? How do I look after it?

To remove any pilling stroke your blanket in the direction of the fibres. Any loose fibres can be de-piled and removed carefully using sharp scissors or by pulling gently on the loose yarn.

Are your blankets washable?

Yes – the great thing about acrylic yarn is that it is machine washable. Blankets and Bed Runners can be washed on a delicate cycle using a short spin. Unfortunatel the yarn is not suitable for use in a tumble dryer. It is alsdo recommended to dry flat where possible to prevent the blanket from stretching.

Are the Hot Water Bottles included?

Yes the Hot Water Bottle includes the bottle itself and the hand knitted cover.

Can you remove the cover from the Hot Water Bottle?

Yes all Hot Water Bottle covers are removable and machine washable. This means that with the right care your Hot Water Bottle cover will out live the life of your Hot Water Bottle and the bottles can be replaced.

Do the Hot Water Bottles comply with British safety standards?

Yes all Hot Water Bottles comply with the Safety British Standard (BS 1970:2012). This is an internationally recognised UK safety standard for rubber and PVC hot water bottles which provides minimum specifications to help ensure safety.

The standard should be permanently marked on the bottle, usually on the inside of the neck.

What are the recommendations for filling Hot Water Bottles?

Although made to strict safety standards it is important that hot water bottles are still used with great care and caution. You should not pour boiling water directly into a hot water bottle. Instead you should use boiled water which has been allowed to cool down to a safe temperature. This is to avoid the risk of burns to your skin or damage to the seams of the bottle as this can increase the risk of future leaks and burns.

You should fill the hot water bottle to the recommended capacity which is usually around three quarters of the total capacity. Do not overfill the bottle as this may cause it to burst.

How long can a hot water bottle last for?

If used properly used and looked after, there is no reason why your hot water bottle cannot be used safely for many years, however, for safety reasons, it is recommended to replace your hot water bottle every two years. Hot Water Bottles are made from natural rubber which degrades over time and so may gradually develop imperfections increasing the risk or leaks and bursts.

How should I store my Hot Water Bottle?

Drain all water into the sink and remove the stopper. Store in a cool, dry, dark place such as a cupboard, drawer, or wardrobe. Avoid storing near radiators or boiler cupboards, as temperature fluctuations can damage the bottle. Keep away from hot surfaces, oil, and grease as these substances can degrade the rubber. Do not place anything on top of a hot water bottle whilst in storage and do not fold the bottle as this can creating a crease in the rubber and weaken it. Check the bottle regularly for wear, damage, and leaks. If you're concerned, don't use it.

How long does a hot water bottle stay hot for?

The length of time a hot water bottle stays warm for depends on various factors such as the material, size, shape and type of cover which is used.

The thickness of the cover as well as the size of the bottle will all be contributing factors to this.

Of all the Hot Water Bottles sold in my online store the Chunky Chenille covers will provide the highest insulation so the heat in these will last the longest. The larger the bottle the longer the heat will last. A large standard Chenille Hot Water Bottle can emit heat for up to 12 hours due to the level of insulation on here.

How hot do your Hot Water Bottles get?

The Chenille Hot Water Bottles have the thickest cover so these will emit a warm glow rather than an intense heat. The Double Knit Chenille bottles will be warmer as the cover is thinner and the Double Knit Tube Yarn bottles will omit the highest level of heat as these covers are more porous.
